Maybe there was a problem with them at that flight... i don't think they were designed this way. They will surely create some unwanted interference to the air-flow and the aerodynamics of the plane.

But Fahhh... Plane next to MiG-29 is like this one below:

Image

His Vmax is about 320-340 km/h so You can imagine what was the speed of the flight :) I bet it was about 250-300km/h and the effect is normal at this speed.
At higher speed, I mean eg. 600-900km/h there are no way to such effects...

You are probably right Sniffer :)

However I will ask a real MiG-29 pilot I happen to know, and we'll sort it out once and forever ;)

The reply i got was:

This is normal when the airplane is flying slowly and the engines need a bit more air than the intakes can provide. At higher speed they close completely.

So i guess you were right Sniffer :)

Migs going at it with great view of Vertical Scan modes being used and this time guns with a full track/lock... seems to work great, so i think the Flankers were using the "dorozhka" mode on purpose... mabe to practice..
Airspeed at 60kph at 2:30 :D
